Contributor Highlight: Sandeep Kaur Everest

"Growing up, my family did not live close to a Gurdwara where I could attend Punjabi school to learn how to read and write. The longer I stayed away from it, the more intimidating it became. I did not learn about my mom’s idea to create a Punjabi 1 book until I was already deep into Unit 1 of the lesson plan drafts she would slip me. I noticed how fast these methods work with little guidance and encourage learning in a judgment free environment. I am confident others interested in learning Punjabi will be able to learn from these methods as well. It is never too late! Her hard work over the years has impacted so many Punjabi-learning students, including myself. This has motivated me to help make her dream come to life.”

Sandeep was born and raised in Northern California and has been a community service leader her entire life. She achieved a dual Bachelor’s in Psychology and Social Behavior with a Minor in Biology at UC Irvine. She graduated from the Samuel Merritt University School of Nursing with Magna Cum Laude Honors, and has worked as an Operating Room Nurse and Charge Nurse since 2016 at Kaiser Oakland. She has previously joined seva missions with Global Medical Dental Brigades in Honduras and Standing Straight Spine Surgery in Punjab to provide free life-saving spinal deformity surgeries for the neediest of children. Learning to read and write Punjabi has encouraged Sandeep to learn Kirtan and read from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, which she has dreamed of doing her whole life. She is constantly finding ways to be more involved in Sikhi and providing Seva to her community.

Sandeep was integral in the early stages of the book, helping shape its content with feedback as a student. She spearheaded the editing and formatting of the Anmol Punjabi series for printing and publishing, and is an active member of the social media management for this new endeavour.
